UPDATED 03.52 a.m. PT: The latest concert in Tenacious D’s Australia tour has been postponed following alleged remarks about Donald Trump‘s assassination attempt made by Kyle Gass.
The guitarist’s “Don’t miss Trump next time” comment when asked to make a wish by his co-frontman Jack Black has attracted plenty criticism, with an Australian senator demanding the Tribute band be deported.
Now, concert promoter Frontier Touring has posted on social media that tonight’s concert at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre has been “postponed,” telling ticket holders to hold on to their tickets for the time being. Tenacious D’s tour Down Under continues for another week, before the band heads over to play a show in Auckland, New Zealand. No word yet on the shows beyond tonight.
PREVIOUS: A birthday wish on the other side of the world about Donald Trump has unleashed Hell on Tenacious D’s Kyle Gass.
“Don’t miss Trump next time,” Jack Black’s longtime bandmate onstage in Australia on July 14 told the ICC Sydney Theatre when asked to “make a wish” by the Kung Fu Panda star. Most of the packed house broke out in laughter – as you can see in the video footage below.
Coming less than 24 hours after an assassination attempt on the former president and presumptive GOP nominee, Gass’ crass comment pretty much ignores the calls from politicians of all parties to lower the rhetoric and temperature. Once seen as a dull rematch with Joe Biden, this year’s White House race has turned into a pitched battle in a very tight campaign between the two POTUS’.
Representatives for Gass did not respond to request for comment on their client’s comment. If and when they do have something to say, this post will be updated. Tenacious D’s SRO tour Down Under continues for just over another week, before the band heads over to play a show in Auckland, New Zealand.
Tenacious D begins a U.S. tour in October with a sold-out show in newly minted GOP VP pick Sen. J.D. Vance’s state of Ohio. Not that longtime Democrat Black has been out of the domestic political mix.
Back on June 7 at a mega-fundraiser in DTLA, a stars and stripes overalls-wearing Black gave a full-throated endorsement to the incumbent. When the president wins in November — yeah! — I’m pretty sure I’m going to get a sweet shoutout in his victory speech for what I gave up to be here,” Black told the well-heeled crowd at the Peacock Theater. “Because when democracy is at stake, Jack Black answers the call. Mr. President, you’re welcome.”
A clearly jet-lagged Biden was the marquee name at the event, interviewed on-stage with Barack Obama by Jimmy Kimmel.
As of right now, there is nothing on the Tenacious D X feed about the onstage remarks or the shooting in Butler, PA on July 13. In fact, the most recent posting on the band’s feed and on Gass’ feed is from July 7.
The TikTok user who first posted the video of Gass’ comments seems to have taken them down now. However, to say that MAGA supporters and more had a hard backlash to Gass’ ill-considered words on his 64th birthday is almost an understatement.
At the same time, in a comparison of apples and oranges, it is worth noting many a Republican, including Trump, mocked the brutal November 2022 attack on former Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s 82-year-old husband in the high profile couple’s gated San Francisco home. A security failure by those who were supposed to be protecting the person second in line to the Presidency, Pelosi was the intended target of the attack, the hammer-wielding David DePape admitted.
“This is not a path that we can continue to be on,” Pelosi said at the time of the attack, in words that sound equally appropriate today.
