A decade ago, media and royal fans were gathered outside the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington waiting for a glimpse of the new royal baby. And now that baby is 10, with a new photograph of Prince George released to mark his milestone birthday on Saturday, July 22.
"The Prince and Princess of Wales are pleased to share a new photograph of Prince George ahead of his tenth birthday tomorrow," Kensington Palace said in a statement this evening. The picture was taken in Windsor earlier this month by Millie Pilkington. The portrait photographer has been a favorite with William and Kate since the beginning of their royal life, taking pictures for their personal album on their 2011 wedding day. More recently, she has photographed the family for images released for Prince Louis' birthday, Princess Charlotte's birthday and Father's Day.
George has made several public appearances over the past few weeks, most recently being seen at Wimbledon with his parents and sister Princess Charlotte as well as on a family day out to the Royal International Air Tattoo. In the past year he took on an important role as Page of Honour to his grandfather King Charles at his coronation as well as walking in the procession for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.
The young Prince’s increasing public appearances are are preparing him for the role he is destined to one day have, however William and Kate remain fiercely protective of their children’s privacy in their day to day lives. The desire for them to grow up out of the spotlight was one of the reasons behind the family’s decision to move from London to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor last year, with George, Charlotte and Louis all starting at Lambrook School in Berkshire. This is where George will remain until he is 13 at which point he could move to Eton College, the school his father attended and which he was spotted looking around a few weeks ago.
While the royal children very much live their lives away from the limelight, William and Kate have allowed glimpses into their characters and interests. On a recent visit, Kate shared that the family enjoys playing sports in their back garden and that Princess Charlotte is competitive just like her mother.
Artwork produced by the three children for Princess Diana on mother’s day was released in 2021. And an impressive watercolor painting of a reindeer made by Prince George ahead of Christmas 2022 was also made public.
