Matthew Perry revealed the signs to look for that indicate he’s relapsed with drugs or alcohol.
“If I say, ‘I’m just going to chill at home alone tonight’… If I ever say, ‘I’m cured,'” Perry shared with Diane Sawyer during his sit-down “Nightline” interview that aired Friday.
The “Friends” alum, who further details his addiction struggles in his forthcoming memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” also told the famed journalist that he did “all sorts of things,” including peruse people’s medicine cabinets during open houses, to acquire Vicodin to maintain his 55-pill-per-day habit.
“And I think they thought, ‘Well, there’s no way that Chandler came in and stole from us,’” said 53-year-old Perry, who is now 18-months sober.
The “Whole Nine Yards” star, who shares in his memoir that he had to have all of his teeth replaced after they fell out while biting into a peanut butter-covered piece of toast, also revealed he underwent emergency dental surgery just days before taping the highly anticipated reunion of the NBC sitcom.
“They did all sorts of things,” he told Sawyer, adding that the operation “made [his] mouth feel like fire.”
When the “Friends” reunion finally aired in May 2021, Perry’s slurred speech and vacant stare left fans worried about his well-being.
“It sounded like my voice was off,” he acknowledged, but he knew he “couldn’t not show up.”
“So what I chose to do was just go and do the best that I could,” he told the longtime interviewer, who noted the “wear and tear on his voice and speech.”
“Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing” is out Nov. 1.
