James Gunn Originally Wanted The Suicide Squad To Fight Superman - Screen Rant

Like nearly every movie ever made, The Suicide Squad had to go through a brainstorming phase before production began, during which it is reported that director James Gunn wanted the group of villains to fight another DC Comics superhero, Superman. Gunn's film opened to theaters worldwide this week and is currently receiving high praise from critic and fans alike. The film holds a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and reviews praise its action, humor, and Task Force X characters.

Like some of the characters in The Suicide Squad, Superman has long been a staple of DC Comics, enjoying his fair share of screen time in numerous films, TV shows, and comic books. Debuting in the comic book Action Comics #1 all the way back in 1938, Superman has come a long way since that first appearance. In fact, it was reported earlier this year that Superman is heading towards a reboot, which is being produced by J.J. Abrams, though no actor has yet been announced to don the red cape. Most recently, Henry Cavill portrayed the hero in Zack Snyder's 2013 film, Man of Steel, before going on to reprise his role in Batman V Superman and Justice League. With the reboot in mind, now would have been a perfect time to have the Man of Steel crossover to other DC movies.

In an interview with Filmstarts, a German entertainment news outlet, Gunn revealed an idea he had for The Suicide Squad. Gunn explains that he brought up the idea of his group of super villains fighting the Kryptonian Man of Steel. He elaborates that this was just a "vague idea" and that the squad would need "to catch Superman for some reason," however no real reason was given as to why they would need to fight the most powerful superhero alive. View Gunn's full quote below (translated from German to English):

"When I started writing The Suicide Squad, one idea was that they would fight Superman. The Suicide Squad has to catch Superman for some reason. That was all, just a vague idea. It's gotten out of hand or is being controlled by someone. And then this group of lousy super villains has to face the most powerful hero in the world."

An all-out brawl between Superman and the squad of lousy super villains would have pleased DC fans to no end. For one thing, given The Suicide Squad's R-rating and level of gore, it would have presented the Man of Steel in a way that he's never really been seen before. For once, fans would see Superman engaged in a no-holds-barred bloodbath that probably would have resulted in the deaths of many characters. To say it would have been a different spin on the Son of Krypton would be an understatement. While Gunn cut out his idea from the film, it still seems like he's interested in it, explaining in the interview, "I like this idea and if DC does this sequel, then please not without me." If DC ever decides to greenlight this crossover, they can count on Gunn to make it happen.

While it would have been interesting to see this face off, it's also a good thing it didn't happen. Gunn's film is based solely around super villains, and adding a superhero to the mix may have disrupted the overall theme. Additionally, since Superman has been the face of DC Comics for over 80 years, his image is everything, and suddenly throwing him into a bloodbath may not have gone over so well with fans. Though Gunn's idea sounds interesting, it ultimately may have hindered The Suicide Squad more than it enhanced it.
