Prince Andrew on Sunday paid tribute to his late father, Prince Philip, calling him the “grandfather of the nation” — and noting the “huge void” his death has left for widow Queen Elizabeth II.
“He was a remarkable man,” the scandal-scarred 61-year-old prince told reporters of his father, who died Friday aged 99.
“I loved him as a father. He was so calm. … He was always someone you could go to and he would always listen,” said Andrew as he left a special service at the Royal Chapel in Windsor Great Park.
“We’ve lost almost the grandfather of the nation,” he said.
Andrew — who has mostly remained out of the spotlight since being dumped from royal duties over his ties to late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein — said his mother, the 94-year-old Queen, remained “stoic.”
“I feel very sorry and supportive of my mother who’s feeling it I think probably more than everybody else,” he said.
“She described it as having left a huge void in her life.”
In a possible dig at Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle, Andrew added, “We, the family — the ones that are close — are rallying around to make sure that we are there to support her.”
Andrew’s younger brother, Prince Edward, said the family was “still trying to come to terms” with the ” very, very sad” loss.
“It’s been a bit of a shock. However much one tries to prepare oneself for something like this it’s still a dreadful shock,” he said of his father, who spent a month in hospital during which he had heart surgery this year.
Edward said the huge show of public mourning and support showed that Philip “might have been our father, grandfather, father-in-law, but he meant so much to so many other people.”
